What does this course cover?

Here's the key areas we look at...

Architecture & Hardware Fundamentals

Understand the "why" behind the technology and the physical components that make up the NEXIS ecosystem.

  • The Shared Storage Evolution: Exploring Avid’s history and unique position in the market.
  • Hardware Anatomy: Deep dives into the NEXIS Pro/Pro+, E-series, and the latest F-series (F2/F2X) hardware.
  • The Brain of the System: Understanding the System Director Appliance (SDA/SDA+).
  • Network Inter-connectivity: How clients talk to the Avid NEXIS core.

Networking & System Configuration

Transition from unboxing to a fully operational file system.

  • Networking Boot Camp (Optional): Essential IP fundamentals and terminology for the NEXIS environment.
  • System Design & Install: Physical installation, rack considerations, and power requirements.
  • Initial Provisioning: First-time setup, licensing, and initializing the file system.
  • Storage Architecture: Best practices for building Storage Groups and managing version upgrades.

Administration & User Management

Learn to manage the daily operations of a high-pressure post-production environment.

  • The Management Console: Navigating the NEXIS UI with confidence.
  • Workspace Logistics: Creating, resizing, and protecting media workspaces.
  • Access Control: Managing Users and User Groups for secure collaboration.
  • Data Redistribution: Understanding how NEXIS balances data across engines.

The Client Experience & Media Workflow

Bridge the gap between the server room and the edit suite.

  • Workstation Optimization: Configuring client settings and mapping network drives.
  • Media Management: Exploring how Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools interact with NEXIS.
  • Continuity and Interface: Managing the Unity Attic and understanding bin locking mechanisms.
  • File Distribution: A technical look at how data is written and protected across the drive array.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Equip yourself with the tools to minimize downtime and resolve critical errors.

  • Performance Diagnostics: Solving playback stutters and bandwidth bottlenecks.
  • Database Health: Knowing when (and how) to rebuild media databases.
  • Hardware Resilience: Step-by-step procedures for replacing failed drives and power supplies.
  • The Engineer’s Toolkit: Leveraging the NEXIS Toolbox for advanced diagnostics.

For most users, Avid NEXIS is a physical device housed in an editing facility or broadcaster. However, each NEXIS will vary in its size (storage capacity) and technical make-up and will have a model associated with it. In this course, we cover ALL the key concepts and terms used to maintain an operational system, but we do not cover ALL platforms within the NEXIS family.

WHAT WE COVER

Our course is based on the following NEXIS models:

  • Avid NEXIS PRO / PRO+
  • Avid NEXIS E2
  • Avid NEXIS E4
  • Avid NEXIS F2
  • Avid NEXIS F2x
  • Avid NEXIS SDA / SDA+

WHAT WE DON'T COVER

While the concepts described in this course enable you to use and manage ALL Avid NEXIS platforms, we do not technically define or cover the following models:

  • Avid NEXIS E5
  • Avid NEXIS E5 NL
  • Avid NEXIS F5
  • Avid NEXIS SSD
  • Avid NEXIS Cloud

All the above are detailed in Avid's NEXIS documentation. We would also recommend the Avid NEXIS ASCR course if you wish to go deeper into these systems.

COURSE OFFERINGS

We offer this course in a number of ways to suite your needs:

INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONAL TIERS

Choose your path: 12-Month Access ($395) or Lifetime Access ($595)

Designed for the "Solo-Specialist"—Assistant Editors, Freelance Engineers, and Power Users. This course provides the technical confidence to walk into any post-house and understand exactly how the media is moving.

    • The Value: Skip the multi-thousand-dollar ACSR track while gaining the specific knowledge needed to install, configure, and troubleshoot systems.
    • Market Edge: Includes real-world troubleshooting modules that aren't found in official documentation, specifically focused on modern macOS / Windows security and high-speed IP networking.

FACILITY STANDARD

4 Users with 18-Month Access

The ultimate onboarding tool for post-houses and production companies. Use this tier to standardize the technical knowledge across your entire team of assistants and operators.

    • The Value: Eliminates "tribal knowledge" by ensuring every staff member follows the same best practices for workspace management and media indexing.
    • Market Edge: Significantly reduces downtime and the need for expensive external engineering call-outs by empowering your internal team to handle 90% of common Avid/NEXIS issues.

FACILITY + Includes 1 to 1 Support & Consulting

4 Users with 18-Month Access + 12 hours live 1-to-1 sessions

This is more than a course; it’s a technical safety net. In addition to extended course access, you receive a 12-hour block of dedicated, one-on-one sessions for expented help or remote support with an Avid Certified Instructor.

    • The Value: Use your consulting hours for specific facility troubleshooting, workflow audits, or personalized staff training sessions in 3-hour chunks.
    • Market Edge: Perfect for facilities undergoing hardware transitions (like moving to the NEXIS F-Series) who need an expert "on-call" to ensure a seamless migration.

EDUCATION AND UNIVERSITY INTEGRATION

Up to 10 Students with 18-Month Access + 12 hours of 1-to-1 sessions

Bridging the gap between the classroom and the industry. This package allows film and media departments to offer industry-standard technical training that makes graduates immediately employable in high-end post-production.

    • The Value: Provides students with a deep-dive into the "Black Box" of shared storage—a skill set rarely taught in standard film programs but highly demanded by employers.
